SEND

SEND

SEND stands for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. In the UK it refers to children who may need extra support or alterations made to help them thrive as they may have differences in their abilities. SEND is not about what a child can't do, it is about recognising individual strengths and providing the right tools to support them. In the UK childcare settings are committed to inclusion, which means creating nuturing environments where children of all abilities are encouraged to learn, play, socialise, experience healthy and exciting activities and parcipate at their own pace.

At Hoop we think it is important for all children to have the opportunity to participate in healthy and fun activities that help them to develop and flourish. Some of the ways that activities listed on Hoop may help children with SEND in particular are:

  • Physical activity can help improve coordination and develop gross motor skills.
  • Regular physical activity helps promotes healthy development, better sleep, and improves overall well-being.
  • Being part of a group can help develop communication, listening, turn-taking and sharing skills.
  • Participating in group activities can help children feel part of a community and that their voice matters
  • Inclusive settings encourage mutual understanding and empathy among all children, reducing stigma and promoting acceptance.
  • Feeling accepted in a group helps children feel valued, boosting their self-esteem and sense of identity.
  • Engaging in structured activities improves attention span, task persistence, and the ability to follow instructions.
  • Trying new things in a supportive environment helps children push boundaries safely, encouraging growth and independence.
  • Families of children with SEND often find support and shared understanding through connections made at these activities.
